SAFE CARE helps build and maintain intact families affected by substance use disorders, ensures effective safety plans are in place for substance-affected infants and that community resources are utilized to meet the needs of their mothers and families through Plans of Safe Care.

In addition, SAFE CARE works to reduce punitive responses to substance use during pregnancy in Alabama by assessing practices of community partners to highlight strengths, gaps and barriers to educate and collaboratively generate solutions to improve outcomes and engagement with pregnant and parenting women with substance use disorder.

Program Goals

  • Engage pregnant and postpartum women in substance abuse treatment

  • Rebuild and retain intact families for infants delivered to substance-involved parents

  • Reduce the length of time in out-of-home placement for children birth to 3 years

  • Ensure effective infant Safety Plans are in place

  • Increase the collaborative capacity of the community to meet the needs of substance-involved families.
